The Great Escaper
Michael Caine and the late Glenda Jackson deliver superb performances in this heart-warming story of a war veteran’s escape from his care home to join the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings in Normandy.
Director: Oliver Parker
Overview
Based on the true story of 90-year-old Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine), who made global headlines when he absconded from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy for the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings. With the encouragement of his wife Rene (Glenda Jackson), Bernard’s adventure was dubbed “the great escape” by the press and captured the imagination of the world as he embodied the defiant spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing.
With superb performances from Caine, and the late Glenda Jackson in her final role, director Oliver Parker delivers a moving story of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.
