Stronger
Jake Gyllenhaal excels in a rousing story of strength and survival, from the acclaimed director of Prince Avalanche and George Washington.
Biopic 2017 119 mins
Director: David Gordon Green
Overview
Jake Gyllenhaal gives a remarkable performance as a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing in this emotionally compelling true story. Determined to win back his ex-girlfriend Erin (Tatiana Maslany), Boston resident Jeff Bauman promises to cheer her on at the finish line of her first marathon. Jeff impatiently awaits Erin’s arrival when an explosion unexpectedly tears through the crowd. Regaining consciousness in hospital, he receives the devastating news he has lost both his legs. Able to give the police vital information regarding the identity of one of the terrorists, Jeff is celebrated by the media, but as he begins the arduous process of recovery and rehabilitation, he struggles to accept the role of hero that is thrust upon him.
Based on Bauman’s own best-selling memoir, David Gordon Green’s (George Washington, Prince Avalanche) rousing drama is an inspiring and often devastating account of one man’s physical and emotional journey, keenly questioning notions of patriotism and heroism along the way.
