Outward Bound Character Training through Adventure

A finishing school of hard knocks for boys, with a curriculum shaped around leadership, initiative and camaraderie.

Documentary 1951 22 mins

Director: Alex Strasser

Overview

Everything about the Outward Bound schools featured in this film is designed to make an impression. Situated in areas of outstanding beauty, like Aberdovey in Wales and Eskdale in the Lake District, they have the most beautiful views, facilities and manicured grounds. In these idyllic locations, experienced tutors dispense a thorough adventure curriculum, from athletics to sailing, mountaineering and rescue.

The perspective is a polished one, paid for by the sponsor. Though billed as open to all walks of life, these are high-end summer camps for high-end teenage boys, all responding to one motto: to serve, to strive and not to yield. The schools still exist today, with six dotted around the country and managed by the Outward Bound Trust, an educational charity providing outdoors learning.
