Melancholia
Cerebral thriller about a German art critic who reconnects with his radical past when he agrees to be involved with an assassination attempt.
Thriller 1989 87 mins
Director: Andi Engel
Overview
The sole directorial credit by the German-born founder of distributor Artificial Eye, Andi Engel, is a cerebral thriller about an art critic drawn into an assassination plot. Jeroen Krabbe plays the German ex-pat who reconnects with his radical past when he’s asked to assist with the hit of a Chilean murderer.
Engel adds a stylish and experimental direction to the political thriller template drawn up by directors like Costa Gavras during the 1970s, crafting an original film that makes one wish he spent more time behind the camera.
