The Bolshoi Ballet company is a Russian national treasure, but it began attracting headlines of the wrong sort in 2013 when artistic director Sergei Filin was shockingly attacked with sulphuric acid.
Filmmakers Nick Read and Mark Franchetti were granted exclusive access behind-the-scenes of the legendary company as it deals with the fallout from the unprecedented scandal while still trying to maintain its fabled standards of excellence. Produced by Simon Chinn, the two-time Academy Award-winning Producer of Man on Wire and Searching for Sugar Man, Bolshoi Babylon is not just an illuminating portrait of a deeply troubled creative organisation, but also a remarkable insight into the complexities of modern Russia.
