Understanding your data:
We collect, use and look at data about your use of BFI Player so you can experience the full service, at its best quality - and so we can make continual improvements.
Without some of this data, it would not be possible for you, for example, to manage an account or to access films you’ve rented.
Our policies and practices on privacy, cookies and other technologies aim to:
- help you understand what data we collect and why;
- help you make informed choices about how you would like your data to be managed, including functionality you’ll lose if you don’t want it stored on your device(s);
- comply with regulations and meet best practice on managing and protecting your data.
The BFI Player service includes:
- the website at player.bfi.org.uk;
- the iOS app downloaded from the Apple's App Store;
- views on Android devices (via Android browser);
- service emails that all registered users receive;
- marketing emails, which users can sign up to - either when registering or via promotions on bfi.org.uk.
Your continued use of the BFI Player service means you consent to the BFI managing your data.

To find out more about how we manage data, request information about how we have used your personal data or request that we delete your personal data, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. A small fee may be charged for processing Freedom of Information requests.
Two types of data are collected about you: anonymised data and personal data.
Data is collected in several ways, including:
- automatically by your software and hardware;
- via cookies and similar technologies used by the BFI;
- via cookies and similar technologies used by the BFI’s third party suppliers;
- via personal information supplied by you, when registering and managing an account, consenting to marketing emails promoting BFI Player content and communicating with the BFI.
Some of these technologies are also used by BFI Player suppliers and other BFI products and services.
Cookies are small text files downloaded to your computer, tablet or mobile device when you use a digital product, such as the BFI Player website or mobile app.
Other technologies might include development tools to deliver mobile content and recognise mobile devices, or tools to recognise that you’ve signed up for email newsletters.
Cookies may be first party, dropped by the BFI - or third party, dropped by our suppliers who support the service, such as video hosting and payment management. We carry no advertising on player.org.uk, so you will not be targeted by other companies.
Cookies may be session (visit) based, so they expire when you close your browser or leave the site - or persistent, so they stay on your device for a set period, to enable you to return to the site without being disrupted by logging in, accepting cookie messages and so on.
Strictly necessary: Without these cookies, you would not be able to use the essential features of BFI Player. For example, you could not sign in after registering or access a film that you have bought.
Functional: These cookies enable or help you to use the service.They can be strictly necessary, as above. Or, they might support the delivery of content, for example, remembering what you’ve looked at previously during a visit, or alter presentation based on your device and browser settings.
Analytical: We use analytical cookies, and other tools, to look at user behaviour and preferences, but all data is anonymised. If we know which pages you spend time on, what you watch, buy and share, and on which devices, we can improve how the site is designed and show more of the films that you prefer.
We also use tools to store certain personal details and purchasing information, which can be accessed by support teams should you experience issues with the site.
Managing your privacy settings:
But if you’re using a shared computer, remember to sign out and close your browser when you end your visit.
If you do wish to manage your cookies, you can do so via your browser settings, by going to the help or preference options on the menu bar, and you may have to navigate to advanced options.
These settings can help you to: delete cookies; stop your browser accepting new cookies; have your browser notify you when you receive a new cookie; or enable cookies.
You should also be able to manage other tools that collect data, such as browser add-ons, via settings - or by visiting the website of your browser provider.
