Old Smithfield
The end of an era as Shrewsbury's cattle market on Smithfield Road shuts its doors for the final time.
From the collection of:

Overview
The Shropshire Photographic Society was on hand to record the final days of the old Smithfield Road livestock market in Shrewsbury. Lorries jostle for position passing evocative advertising hoardings as the farmers leave the nearby Victoria Inn for a final day of buying and selling before the market closes and is moved to a new site at Harlescott. It may be more efficient but the new site cannot compare in character with the old.
The modern development at Harlescott lasted until 2006 when the market was moved again to a new site at Battlefield.
