The arrival of road menders stirs up tensions in a vibrant cosmopolitan London street. Pressburger produced his first post-Powell film from a script he’d written in 1934, set in the multi-cultural heart of London. Lee’s Julia Gozzi, an Italian girl bound for Canada, falls for Gregson’s Irish rogue Michael, forcing her to choose between love and family loyalty. The studio-bound production conveys the claustrophobia of inner-city life through Carmen Dillon’s skilful set design.
