Fougalle takes the cup, money, and all the plaudits in this thrilling film full of racecourse excitement and despair.
This engaging film documents the inaugural Magnet Cup in York. Crowds begin to fill the racecourse stands in anticipation of the start of the race, and punters eagerly place bets on the horses competing for the cup. The race begins with the horses sprinting away from the camera and ends with two horses neck and neck at the finish.
The Magnet Cup (now renamed the John Smith’s Cup) has taken place in York annually since the first race in 1960. The event continues to be sponsored by John Smith’s Brewery. This film is part of the large C.H. Wood collection. C.H. Wood ran a prolific film production company in Bradford that existed from the 1910s until the early 21st Century.
