York and the Army Film

Queen Victoria’s grandson and Yorkshire troops march to the cinema with war on the horizon

Non-Fiction 1914 1 mins Silent

Overview

The since-demolished Victoria Hall in Goodramgate, York, later the Albany Ballroom, wasn't built as a cinema. But here the regiments of the York garrison march through the historic city streets before packing into a screening of the government-sanctioned 'British Army Film'. Featuring over two hours of sterling soldierly stuff, this film (sadly lost) was part of a recruitment drive which started months before the outbreak of WWI.
