Greenland Voyage
Colour scenes showing mountaineer and explorer Bill Tilman bound for Greenland in 1961-62 in search of new mountain challenges on board “Mischief”.
Overview
A series of film clips showing Bill Tilman and crew preparing to depart from Lymington Harbour on the Solent in Hampshire, southern England, before sailing for West Greenland. Scenes include time at sea, trying to avoid icebergs, the party climbing and local people preparing / curing fish. Among the places visited is Nuuk - the capital of Greenland, located on the southwest coast.
The 'Mischief' was Tilman’s first Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter, built in 1906 and purchased by him in 1954. The following year he sailed her to the Strait of Magellan to cross the Patagonian ice-cap, and logged 20,000 miles on this first of his many ocean voyages. On board 'Mischief' Tilman travelled to Greenland in 1961, 1962, 1964 and 1965. He published numerous accounts of his sea voyages and travels. The sole purpose stated by Tilman for his expeditions was to combine the joys of sailing with climbing.
