'If Winter Comes' - It Has!

Dashing through the snow; on a six-horse open plough... The streets are ready for sledging in 1920s Buxton.

Non-Fiction 1923 1 mins

Overview

The first big snow of winter brings both excitement and chaos; and in 1920s newsreels it prompted reports filled with smiling sledgers just as it does on today's TV. Here, though, the freshly-ploughed streets are filled not with creeping cars but with whizzing toboggans. The story title refers to ASM Hutchinson's hugely popular 1921 novel, If Winter Comes, filmed in 1923 and again in 1947.
