Flavio

Photographer Gordon Parks’ remarkable film depicts a day in the life of an industrious 12-year-old boy living in the impoverished favela slums of Rio de Janeiro.

Sent by Life magazine to photograph the favela slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the acclaimed American photographer Gordon Parks developed a bond with one the residents – a young boy named Flávio da Silva. Having witnessed the destitution and squalor that Flavio and his family had to endure, Parks later returned to make a documentary depicting a day in the life of the industrious 12-year-old.
