Overview
Sent by Life magazine to photograph the favela slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the acclaimed American photographer Gordon Parks developed a bond with one the residents – a young boy named Flávio da Silva. Having witnessed the destitution and squalor that Flavio and his family had to endure, Parks later returned to make a documentary depicting a day in the life of the industrious 12-year-old.
