Overview

Dora, a former teacher, earns money writing letters for illiterate people in Rio de Janeiro’s Central Station. One day she meets Josué, a nine-year-old boy whose mother requests Dora’s services so he can be reunited with his lost father. After the mother tragically dies, Dora reluctantly begins a journey with Josué across northern Brazil to find his family, gradually developing an unlikely bond.

Winner of the Berlin Golden Bear, and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, the film was also nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Walter Salles’ poignant yet unsentimental film is a tale about the unexpected places life can takes us, both physically and emotionally. The film’s success cemented Walter Salles’ reputation on the international stage.
