The British regain the Wightman Cup after 28 years, with a 4–3 victory over the United States team.
This Gaumont British newsreel from 14 June 1958 shows 17-year-old Christine Truman beating the USA’s Althea Gibson. A flashback to success at Wimbledon in 1930 illustrates how times had changed since the UK's last victory in the Wightman Cup. Truman’s victory was sensational, as Althea Gibson was the reigning Wimbledon ladies' singles champion and in 1958 would win the singles (again), ladies' doubles and be a losing finalist in the mixed doubles.
