Festival Wimbledon
Extended highlights from the 1951 Wimbledon Tennis Championships
Overview
Gaumont British News put together this lovely highlights package from the 1951 Wimbledon championships, from early rounds to the finals. There were a fair share of memorable moments, most notably the first appearance at Wimbledon by an African American player, future champion Althea Gibson. The usual air of pride and optimism surrounding Wimbledon is further boosted by the festivities around the 1951 Festival of Britain, visited by many of the players.
World number one Doris Hart of the USA attained the Triple Crown, winning all three titles she competed for: women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles - and all on the same day!
