Great Northern Railway Works at Doncaster (1901)

Countless men, women and children spill out on to the screen from "The Plant" at the heart of the Yorkshire railway town.

This is Mitchell & Kenyon at their best. Some near-perfect staging (bridge against buildings against sky) first frames high-spirited boys tearing towards us with infectious joy. Then the crowd thickens with older, male, blue-collar workers. Later, we see smaller groups of office workers, female as well as male. The scale and local supremacy of Doncaster's railway industry is inescapable.
