Joey’s ex is Brian, a tentacled alien with a messiah complex in Addison Heimann’s freaky genre-bending body-horror sci-fi sex comedy.

Flatmates Joey and Craig have no income and a sewage emergency to pay for when Brian, Joey’s ex, turns up to invite them for a weekend in his expensive villa along with his sinister assistant Laura. Brian (a twinkly-eyed Lou Taylor Pucci, Spring)is an alien who has the power to temporarily erase all feelings of sadness or insecurity – he’s also capable of making people’s heads explode.

This is a very weird, very funny movie that explores childhood trauma, interspecies intercourse and millennial angst. With influences from Amat Escalante’s The Untamed (available to watch on BFI Player) and Japanese horror, and premiering in the Midnight Section of the Sundance Film Festival - the category for films that cannot be categorized or easily explained through a genre – Heimann delivers a slimy, psychedelic and madly original ride.
