Overview
Detroit techno legend Carl Craig’s genre-defying music has reached audiences around the world - from jazz enthusiasts at the Montreux Jazz Festival to premier classical venues such as Carnegie Hall. But at the height of his creative success, the musician faces challenges that could ultimately force him to stay away from the dance floor.
Set against the backdrop of Detroit’s decline and recovery, this intimate documentary traces the life of the legendary producer, DJ and record label creator. It follows Craig’s journey from his middle-class upbringing in an African-American family, where his artistic ambitions were nurtured, even as they diverged from family traditions and expectations of higher education. Thirty-five years into his music career, Craig has evolved beyond music, embraced by the visual arts world through recent exhibitions at MOCA in Los Angeles and Dia Beacon in New York. This film contains sequences of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
