Findus - Pancakes: Pancake Day (Revised Version)
The iconic Findus frozen food, a crispy pancake wrapped around a choice of four different fillings.
Overview
“Pancakes! Crispy pancakes! It’s a Findus pancake day!” claims the excitably breathless narrator, before fans of the product extol their favourite filling: minced beef, cheddar cheese, chicken and bacon, chicken curry, each shown in enticingly steaming close-up. The slogan “success on a plate for you” emphasises convenience as much as nutrition, a core attraction of Crispy Pancakes being that they required no effort to prepare, making them particularly attractive to child-harassed housewives.
First introduced in the early 1970s, Findus Crispy Pancakes ranked with Angel Delight and Arctic Roll as regular staples in British households and student accommodation over the next two decades. After being voted the most popular British retro food in 2009 (possibly in response to a paean of praise from popular chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall), an upmarket range was launched featuring such flavours as Lobster Thermidor and Moroccan Lamb Tagine. But the revival was short-lived: following a 2013 horsemeat scandal, the Findus brand was abolished in 2016, along with the iconic Crispy Pancakes.
