Cookies and Internet Advertising Policy
The BFI and approved third parties use cookies and other technologies, as well as advertising identifiers:
- to make it easy to access our services by remembering you when you return
- to provide and analyse our services
- to learn more about you and your likely interests, and to deliver and tailor marketing or advertising that may be more relevant to you
We want you to be informed about our use of these technologies, so this section explains the types of technologies we use, what they do and your choices regarding their use.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files stored on your computer or device when you visit a website or use online services. They are widely used to make websites work, to improve your user journey on the site, to analyse your site usage so we can see what works and what doesn’t, and to measure how well we’re doing and assist in our marketing efforts.
What are advertising identifiers?
Advertising identifiers are similar to cookies and are found on many mobile devices and tablets (for example, the ‘Identifier for Advertisers’ (or IDFA) on Apple iOS devices and the ‘Google Advertising ID’ on Android devices), and certain streaming media devices. They are used to make online advertising more relevant.

Accessibility
Since BFI Player development was bought in house in September 2016, we have been working to make the site as accessible as possible.
In 2018, we worked with the Digital Accessibility Centre (DAC) to review our work and improve on it.
We develop according to level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. However, our accessibility can be impacted by some of the tools that we use and some of our content is limited by its age and/or source.
This page outlines the most accessible ways to use BFI Player as well as areas of our site where some users with additional needs may experience issues.
Please send feedback about the accessibility of BFI Player to [email protected].
Using BFI Player
To maximise the accessibility improvements we can deliver, we have focused on desktop performance, and with the following browser and tools:
-
Mac: The latest version of Chrome, using Voiceover if you use a screen reader;
-
PC: The latest version of Chrome, using NVDA if you use a screen reader.
However, other browsers, tools and devices are used for basic accessibility testing and improvements - but the accessibility of some features may be more limited if you use those.
Accessible content on BFI Player
A selection of our content is available with audio description (AD), but only on PC and mac.
Some of our films are also available with subtitles, known as closed captions (CC).
The easiest way to find films with AD or CC is via search.
You can do this by:
-
Finding the search field via our navigation at the top of our pages - it should be one of your first few clicks on the page;
-
Then, enter a search term;
-
The search page will show, with film links based on your search term: you can navigate between results on Rental, Subscription and Free tabs;
-
If any films based on your search term have AD or CC, you will then be able to navigate to the Accessibility filter on each tab;
-
The Accessibility filter will have checkbox options for either/or: audio described and closed captions, with the number of films available and you can navigate to the film links in the search results;
-
To access all films with AD or CC, you can clear the top search box and the Accessibility filter will show automatically, with the number of films available and you can navigate to the film links in the search results.
Clickable labels listing either/or CC and AD can also be found on each film page, towards the top, as one of your first few clicks after the search field.
These labels link to all films with the same accessibility feature (CC or AD) within the same section - that is, Rentals, Subscription or Free.
BFI Player accessibility testing
Through DAC’s services, BFI Player has been tested on desktop and mobile, by users with sight, mobility, hearing and learning disabilities.
DAC testers used the latest versions of the most popular browsers and accessibility tools where needed, including:
-
JAWS screen reader
-
NVDA screen reader
-
Dragon voice activation software
-
ZoomText magnification
-
Keyboard only navigation
-
Voiceover (on iOS, with the use of rotor menus)
At the BFI, while we focus on Chrome for both mac and PC accessibility improvements, using Voiceover and NVDA screen readers, we test at a basic level on the following:
-
Browser versions: Latest versions of Firefox, IE, Edge, Chrome and Safari (on iPhone and iPad);
-
Screen readers: NVDA (PC), Voiceover and Chromevox (Mac) and Voiceover (on iPhone and iPad);
-
Keyboard navigation: On the following browsers: Firefox, IE, Edge and Chrome.
Accessibility of features on BFI Player
This section summarises accessibility improvements we have made, are in progress or need to make - and we welcome your feedback:
Visual design:
-
We have made it easier to distinguish between site elements by increasing the size and weight of our fonts and increasing the contrast of our brand colours.
Images:
-
We have removed film title names from images where there is no further description about the image’s content.
-
We have removed dynamically changing multiple images, to avoid disturbance; now they change only on a new page load.
Navigation:
-
We have made link text larger and also clearer, adding and/or clarifying the type of content linked to and whether is it shown in a pop-up or a new page.
-
Keyboard-only navigation improvements have been introduced for the first time with DAC’s feedback, which has also helped improve the user experience for people with visual disabilities;
-
It is now easier to navigate between video accessibility options;
-
Dropdown navigation, used in our Help and similar sections, has been enabled;
-
We have removed scrolling content that hides on-page text;
-
Silent double clicks are no longer audible;
-
The order of headings that refer to different page sections have been made more logical, in line with heading numbers.
-
However, we have not yet improved all changes required to The Cut section, which will require a significant rebuild of the content;
-
It is also difficult to navigate the Britain on Film map, which relies on third party development and tools. We recommend that you use our search field and results to find films, as described above.
Registration, payment and account sections:
-
We do have improvements to make on account and payment sections, but we have completed some work on improving:
-
The clarity and visibility of text used for field titles, explanations and error messages;
-
The ease of navigating between fields and text, including on pop-up error and descriptive messages, and also checkboxes;
-
The ease of navigating between user account tabs, text, buttons and tables.
-
The impact of non-visual elements - we have hidden security elements from screen readers.
-

6.2 General service: This section covers terms relevant across the whole service, including free films; and terms relevant for both paid-for parts of the service - subscription and rentals. See section 7 for subscription-only terms, and section 8 for rentals-only terms.
6.3 Account registration: Only one account can be registered per email address.
6.4 Equipment needed: To play films on the service, you must have internet access and a BFI Player compatible device, with adequate internet download speeds (see Help).
6.5 Payment method: To rent films or take out a subscription on the service, you must provide us with a current, valid, accepted payment card ('your payment method'), which may be updated by your bank as it expires.
When you enter or update a payment method and carry out a transaction with it, this payment method will become your new payment method for rentals and the payment method if you take out a subscription.
You can store only one payment method at a time on BFI Player, and you authorise us to continue billing the payment method - it may be updated by your bank as it expires - and you remain responsible for any uncollected amounts.
6.6 Changes to prices: We may change the prices of our rental films and subscription service from time to time; however, any price changes will apply to you no earlier than 30 days following email notice to you.
6.7 Changes to film payment types: We may move films between rentals and subscription, from time to time, based on rights agreements with our licensors; however, your original payment type (rental or subscription) will be honoured - you will not be charged more if this happens.
6.8 Viewing films: You can view BFI Player films only in the UK.
BFI Player, and any content viewed through the service, are for your personal and non-commercial use only.
When you rent films or take out a subscription, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, licence to access BFI Player and view films on a streaming-only basis.
Except for the foregoing limited licence, no right, title or interest shall be transferred to you. You agree not to use the service for public performances.
The number of devices on which you may watch rental and subscription films is limited to four, and two of those devices only can be swapped within any six month period. You may watch films only on a single device at any one time.
6.9 Age restrictions: You may not create an account if you are younger than 16 years of age. By creating an account, you represent that you are at least 16 years of age, and, to the extent required by law, you have the permission of a parent or guardian to create an account and use the Service.

We may terminate or restrict your use of our service if you violate these Terms or are engaged in illegal or fraudulent use of the service.
7. Using BFI Player subscription
7.1 Also see section 7 for overall Terms.
7.2 Subscription details: You can find specific details regarding your BFI Player subscription - such as dates and payments made - by visiting our website, signing in and clicking on the Account link on the top navigation bar.
7.3 Free Trials: Your BFI Player subscription may start with a free trial. The free trial period of your subscription lasts for 14 days, or as otherwise specified during sign-up, and is intended to allow new members to try the service. You will be notified when signing-up to subscription whether you are eligible for a free trial.
7.4 Subscription payments: We will automatically bill your payment method for your monthly subscription fee at the end of the free trial period, unless you cancel your subscription prior to the end of the free trial period.
The fee for subscription will be billed every month, to your payment method, on the calendar day corresponding to the commencement of your paid subscription.
Your BFI Player subscription will continue until terminated. Unless you cancel your subscription before your monthly renewal date, you authorise us to charge your next month’s subscription fee to your payment method. You authorise us to continue billing the payment method, as it may be updated by your bank as it expires.
If a payment is not successfully settled, due to expiration, insufficient funds, or otherwise, and you do not change your payment method or cancel your account by the end of the billing cycle, we will suspend your access to subscription. This may result in a change to your payment billing dates, and you remain responsible for any uncollected amounts.
7.5 Subscription cancellation: You can cancel your subscription at any time, and will continue to have access to subscription films through to the end of your monthly billing period.
We do not provide refunds or credits for any partial-month subscription periods or unwatched films.
To cancel, go to your Account / Subscription tab on BFI Player’s top navigation bar, and follow the instructions for cancellation.
7.6: Subscription content: The content available in Subscription is continually updated but is a smaller subset of all content available on BFI Player.
7.7: Gift Subscription: The gift subscription is a year-long subscription to BFI Player's subscription service, it does not include a free trial and does not auto renew. Help with gift card redemption can be found here.
8. Renting BFI Player films
8.1 Also see section 7 for overall Terms.
8.2 Availability periods: Once you have purchased a rental film, you have 30 days to watch it, and 48 hours to finish watching it after pressing play. After those periods have elapsed, and you have not watched a complete film, you will need to rent again to watch the film.
We do not provide refunds or credits for any unwatched films.
8.3 BFI member discount: You can get BFI member discount of 15% discount on all rentals, if you enter a valid membership number and your registered postcode on BFI Player (in uppercase, with a space between the two parts, like: W1T 1LN) .
You can enter your number and registered postcode when you sign up for an account, via Account / Profile on BFI Player’s top navigation bar, or when you rent a film.
If your membership number expires, this will be removed from BFI Player within 48 hours, and you will no longer receive the 15% discount on rentals.
You can use your BFI membership number against one BFI Player account only.
8.4 Rentals content: The content available in Rentals is continually updated but is a smaller subset of all content available on BFI Player.
9. Hyperlinks and third party sites
9.1 The service may contain hyperlinks or references to external third party websites. Any such hyperlinks or reference is provided for your convenience only. We have no control over third party websites and accept no responsibility for any content, material or information contained in them.

Your use of a third party site may be governed by the terms of that third party site.
10. Warranties and limitation of liability
10.1 You agree that your use of the service is on an ‘as is’ and ‘as available’ basis. Consequently, we make no representations, warranties, conditions or other Terms (whether express or implied) in relation to the provision of the service, including without limitation as to completeness, accuracy and currency or any content and information on the service, or as to satisfactory quality, or fitness for particular purpose.
10.2 To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we exclude all liability (whether arising in contract, tort, breach of statutory duty or otherwise) which we may otherwise have to you as a result of:
10.2.1 any error or inaccuracies in any information or material within or relating to the service;
10.2.2 the unavailability of the service for whatsoever reason; and
10.2.3 any representation or statement made on the service.
10.3 Under no circumstances shall we be liable to you for any loss or damage suffered (including without limitation direct or indirect losses) arising from your use of, or reliance on, the service (including the downloading or any software, program or information).
10.4 We do not exclude or limit our liability for death or personal injury arising from our negligence, for any fraudulent misrepresentation made by us on the service or for any other statutory rights which are not capable of being excluded.
11. Indemnity

How we choose our films
In Subscription, we aim to present the best in contemporary independent and classic arthouse cinema, many representing landmark moments in film.
In Rentals, we offer the broad catalogue of new releases and UK festival favourites, such as classics from the BFI London Film Festival, and BFI Flare - which also represents our diverse audiences.
From established classics to films that otherwise might be overlooked, our collection is big enough to explore but not too big to bewilder, all hand-picked with the knowledge and passion of the renowned BFI team.
What makes us unique
As a major funder of British filmmaking, we bring you the best of our BFI-backed films that champion new talent and unfamiliar stories from unfamiliar voices.
The BFI is also the home of Sight and Sound magazine, one of the most revered and longest-running film magazines in the world. You’ll find many of the critically acclaimed and must-see films featured in its Greatest Films of All Time poll, across our collections.
Many of our collections reflect the BFI’s wider cultural mission, complementing its seasonal programming of our UK venues such as BFI Southbank, film distribution and DVD and Blu-ray publishing strands.
By choosing BFI Player, you are actively contributing to preserving and promoting UK film heritage while supporting the next generation of storytellers.
