Waves at Southport (1902)
Beautiful shots of gentle waves on a shingle beach.
Overview
Sea waves were a popular film subject from the very earliest days of the cinema. Few subjects expressed so well the particular qualities of the moving photographic image. This film, which may have been commissioned by Tweedale for his 'Bio-Motograph' show, was shot in bright sunlight and in close up. The full effect of the lacy-edged wavelets is quite beautiful.
Tweedale also commissioned the beautiful panorama of the Buxton Skyline, also in the Mitchell & Kenyon collection, so we might deduce that his entertainment favoured refined, touristic films rather than the livelier subjects shot by M&K, such as their factory gate films.
