        Overview

A relaxed film for a very relaxing occasion as teachers and their families from Bradford Institute of Technology enjoy various games and a cricket match on a summer’s day in 1963, filmed in sumptuous Kodachrome. Among the delights on offer are Test Your Strength, a “Kokonut Shy”, a children’s race, some wonderful small twin sisters and a cricket match featuring a Jimmy Edwards impersonator.

This is one of three garden parties for the local Teachers Social Association that were filmed in the early 1960s, all part of a wider collection of films from the University of Bradford. This one is notable for having the Principal of Bradford Institute of Technology, as it was then, Dr Ted Edwards (aka ‘Red Ted’) having a go on the Test Your Strength. Dr Edwards became Principal in 1957 and steered the college towards University status, achieved in 1966, to become its first Vice-Chancellor. He had a great influence on the College, and then University, in taking it in progressive directions.
