St Ann's
Stephen Frears' documentary about two hard-working families living in unsanitary houses in St Ann's, Nottingham
Overview
In 1969, St Ann's in Nottingham is a harsh place to live. Stephen Frears' documentary follows two families living in damp, cold and unsanitary council houses. In tough conditions, the proud, hard-working parents struggle to keep their homes fit to live in and their children fed and clothed. The film also asks questions whether the welfare state is working, with academics from Nottingham University analysing exactly what poverty means - does having a television set mean you're not in poverty?
