Overview

Colin Bower reports from Norwich market and a Stevenage supermarket, interviewing shoppers, stallholders and managers to determine whether modern indoor shopping is better value than traditional outdoor markets, or vice versa. Norwich market, located off Gentleman’s Walk in the centre of the city, was established in the 11th century. The shopping centre in Stevenage was opened by the Queen in 1959 and was the first purpose-built pedestrianised area in Britain.
