General Buller Embarking on the 'Dunottar Castle' at Southampton
Anticipating a swift victory General Buller heads for his third campaign in South Africa, with his wife in tow
Overview
A nascent genre in the Boer War films, ‘embarkation’ films show well-known people and regiments departing for South Africa. Most notable, given that this is a Warwick Trading Company film, is the appearance of another filmmaker, WKL Dickson, in the bottom left corner of the frame. Dickson travelled on the ‘Dunottar Castle’ and can be seen trying to introduce himself to the General. The rivalry between film producers and exhibitors for popular footage is an interesting subplot in the history of the Boer War.
