        Overview

York’s long association with Catholicism is still very much alive in this interesting film that displays Pope John Paul II’s visit to the city in 1982. A crowd gathers in the early stages of the film as the camera weaves through the people in order to showcase the extreme size and diversity of the crowd. Flags are waved and people shout as the Pope’s helicopter approaches for landing.

He has received praise for the work that he did to help bring about an end to Communist occupation in Europe in the late 20th Century. John Paul II is said to have visited well over one hundred countries during his papacy including the United Kingdom, making him the first reigning Pope to visit the country.
