Britain's women tennis stars make the finals of the American National Championships at Forest Hills, New York.
It's 1927 and British tennis players Betty Nuthall, Kitty Godfree, Ermyntrude Harvey and Joan Fry are in the finals of the American Championships (now the US Open) at Forest Hills, New York. The four are all smiles for the Topical Budget newsreel cameras in this charming item, which also features scenes of the packed stands watching play.
In the singles final, teenager Betty Nuthall (wearing the headband), one of the youngest finalists at the time, lost in straight sets to America’s Helen Wills. The doubles final was all British - Godfree and Harvey (in lighter headbands) beat Nuthall and Fry (in dark headbands) two sets to one.
