England Expects
A memorial to Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square inspires new heroes as war rages again in Europe.
Overview
"England expects that every man will do his duty": the words of Lord Nelson, England's greatest naval hero took on new resonance as the nation found itself at war again. Filmed on the first Trafalgar Day of WWI, this newsreel item invites its audience to take pride in former military glories. Clearly, that year at least, the annual memorial served more as recruitment drive than solemn remembrance.
