Day Trip to Eastbourne
Join the Diamonds on a day trip to sunny Eastbourne - with packed beaches, a splendid pier and a visit to a model village inside a military fort
From the collection of:
Overview
This holiday film starts with the Diamonds boarding an East Kent coach. Arriving in Eastbourne, we see the pier and a beach packed with holiday makers - many sitting in deckchairs. After taking photos of the beach, Roger and Gillian walk with Mum and Grandma along the promenade and buy lollies at a stall. They are next seen walking around the model village before the film ends with Grace and Gillian sitting in deckchairs.
Edward 'Ted' Diamond was born in 1908 and acquired a love of photography from his grandfather, who was a professsional photographer. In addition to his photography, Ted also used an 8mm cine-camera and filming mostly around Herne Bay and Canterbury, recorded family holidays and celebrations, seaside scenes and cricket. Grace, Ted's wife, appears in this film along with their daughter, Gillian, son Roger and Grandma. They can be seen visiting Eastbourne's model village, which was located on the parade ground of the Redoubt - a circular coastal defence resort dating from the Napoleonic Wars. The model village was removed after it was vandalised in 1970 though today the Redoubt houses a military museum.
