Sir Hugh Trenchard, who played a central role in the development of the Royal Air Force during and after the First World War, is seen here towards the end of his era as Chief Of The Air Staff wielding a trowelas he lays the foundation stone for St Alphage church in Hendon, close to the RAF headquarters.
