Sculptor Anish Kapoor offers insight into his work for a major exhibition of new British sculpture at the Hayward Gallery

Documentary 1985 14 mins Silent

Overview

Indian-born British sculptor Anish Kapoor discusses the work he's preparing for The Sculpture Show, a major exhibition held at the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery in 1983 - and he's as eloquent as his work is compelling. The show was sponsored by the Arts Council to review controversial new developments in British sculpture.

This is one of a series of interviews with modern British sculptors which were shot for the Arts Council's film Just what is it...? (1984). The 31-year-old artist’s reputation was on the rise at the time of this interview. He had enjoyed the first of many solo shows at London’s Lisson Gallery and would claim his place on the international art stage the following year, 1984, with his first solo exhibition at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery in New York. He became a household name in Britain when his iconic sculpture and observation tower, Orbit Tower, graced the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London, in 2012.
