The President of the Pharmaceutical Society discusses the controversy around re-introduced NHS prescription charges.

1968 13 mins

Overview

The re-introduction of NHS prescription charges in 1968, three years after their abolition by the Wilson government, caused friction between patients’ groups and the Pharmaceutical Society. Here, the Society’s President Alan Aldington discusses plans to be put before Government to alleviate embarrassment for those having to reveal hardship at the pharmacy counter. This is one of more than 300 interviews filmed by Bernard Braden for his ultimately unbroadcast TV series, Now and Then. Several other examples are also available on BFI Player.
