Late Shift

12 rating

Gripping drama in which a nurse finds herself caught in a race against time during an unrelenting night shift.

Floria arrives for work on overstretched surgical ward only to discover a colleague is absent and she is required to care for an unreasonably high number of patients. The demands keep piling up as she juggles critical cases and incoming emergencies. Amid this chaos, one small mistake threatens to topple everything. A moving, empathetic tribute to undervalued healthcare professionals everywhere.

The camera in this hugely accomplished drama feels almost documentary-like, adopting a realistic and procedural approach to life on the stressful ward, while also embracing a hurtling tempo that gives the film the air of a taut thriller. It’s a gripping watch, and Leonie Benesch (The Teachers’ Lounge, September 5) is terrific as an overburdened but dedicated nurse facing down innumerable challenges during a demanding shift.
