Overview
After receiving an anonymous tip, a policeman ( Edward Woodward ) travels to the Scottish island of Summerisle to search for a missing girl. When he arrives, the Islanders, most of whom seem to be practising pagans, claim to have never seen or heard of the young girl. The mystery leads to our protagonist making a horrifying discovery.
This folk horror classic sees Christopher Lee step out of his infamous roles of Hammer Horror monsters, and into the role of the more quietly terrifying Lord Summerisle. Despite being cut for a double-bill release (most but not all of the missing footage is now restored) and critically ignored at the time, The Wicker Man would go on to become a British cult classic, cementing a place as one of the 'Unholy Trinity' of British folk horror alongside Witchfinder General (1968) and Blood on Satan's Claw (1971).
