Ideal Home
An 'admag' adventure at the Ideal Home exhibition.
Director: Graham Watts
Overview
Jim’s Inn became a firm favourite amongst viewers of early independent television. Here Jimmy Handley and his wife Maggie investigate products for this advertising magazine programme on show at the Ideal Home exhibition in Olympia, which opened on the day of transmission. Until they were outlawed by Parliament in 1963, Jimmy and Maggie Hanley had been the king and queen of the ad-mags, discussing the latest consumer products with guests in their fictional pub, in the programme Jim's Inn. The Pilkington Report led to the demise of all ad-mags on television, highlighting the possible viewer confusion between genuine endorsement and fictional character endorsement.
