Overview
Summer camp is often the highlight of the year for members of the Boys’ Brigade. In 1950, Stowmarket Boys’ Brigade have their summer camp in Norfolk at Beeston Regis. The campsite has scenic clifftop views, centrally located between the seaside hotspots of Cromer and Sheringham. Following the usual regiments of bugle calls and uniform inspection are fun and games and a big splash about in the sea. A group portrait of the happy campers completes the film.
This film is a great example of the activities at a typical summer camp for Boys’ Brigade members in 1950, captured by George Wilden, a photographer based in Stowmarket. The aims of the Boys’ Brigade as a youth organisation was to combine drill and fun activities whilst promoting Christian values. The 1st Mid Suffolk Boys Brigade in Stowmarket was founded in 1891 and hundreds of boys (and from 2010 girls) have been members over the years.
