Overview
Picturesque scenes are filmed from the River Fowey in Cornwall for this family who is holidaying in historical harbour town of Fowey (pronounced Foy). The Fowey valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the river attracts many yachts for this reason. The annual Fowey Royal Regatta has been held since Victorian times and attended by tourists and royalty alike. The weeklong celebrations in August start with a flora dance.
A carnival, concerts, an open water swim, crabbing, a crazy raft race, gig racing, a giant pasty competition, fireworks and Port of Fowey Race Organising Committee sailing events are part of today's. Fowey is also an important port to commercial shipping and has ship chandleries for the sale of nautical items and repairs. Cruise liners occasionally stop and commercial ships still export china clay from here for use in the porcelain and paper industries. Author of Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek and Jamaica Inn, Daphne du Maurier is associated with the area. She lived at Readymoney Cove before moving to Menabilly which was thought to be the inspiration for Manderley in her novel Rebecca.
