University College of Southampton

Liberal Lord Chancellor Viscount Haldane opens new buildings for the scholars of Southampton.

Non-Fiction 1914 1 mins Silent

Overview

A ceremony fit for the newsreel cameras greets the opening of a spanking new Highfield site of the renamed Southampton University College (formerly Hartley University College). Alas, we're shown almost nothing of the buildings, though we do see Lord Chancellor Viscount Haldane's speech - which seems to be listened to more attentively by the audience than by those on the platform behind him!

The outbreak of war six weeks after this opening put a halt to lectures before they could begin, and the buildings were soon put to use as a military hospital; they were returned to the University by the War Office in 1920.
