Ripon Cottage Hospital
Princess Mary is given a warm welcome by locals as she arrives to open a new wing of Ripon Cottage Hospital.
Overview
Princess Mary receives a warm a warm welcome from Ripon locals as she arrives to open a new wing of the town's cottage hospital. The newsreel cameraman captures Mary as she processes gracefully through the Spa Gardens to place a wreath at the foot of the memorial to King Edward VII, her grandfather. This kind of royal visit provided steady news fodder for newsreel companies in the early 20th century.
Princess Mary, daughter of King George V, had a strong connection with Yorkshire through her marriage to Viscount Lascelles, 6th (1882 -1947) a peer and a Yorkshire landowner. They resided at Goldsborough Hall, a few miles east of Harrogate, and latterly at Harewood House, near Leeds. The presence of girl guides at the opening reflects Princess Mary's interest in the Girl Guide movement. She was honorary president of the British Girl Guide Association from 1920 until her death in 1965.
