Scenes by the Stone Jetty, Morecambe (1902)
Morecambe's splendid Central Pier features in this lively snapshot of crowds enjoying an Edwardian summer's day at the Lancashire resort.
Overview
This ebullient snapshot of seaside life was filmed in late June or early July and shown at Morecambe's Winter Gardens theatre by showman AD Thomas. Daytrippers throng the Stone Jetty, site of the former harbour, where signs offer palmistry and phrenology and the curious peep into a kinetoscope. We also see the Central Pier with its magnificent pavilion, once dubbed 'the Taj Mahal of the North'.
This film is a companion piece to the wonderful Panoramic View of the Morecambe Sea Front (1901), filmed during the previous summer season. Morecambe's Central Pier opened in 1869, with steamers calling at its pier head until 1914. The original pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1933 and the pier itself finally demolished in the 1990s.
