Storm damage in Penzance and Newlyn
A severe storm has caused devastation along the coast between Penzance and Newlyn. Westward TV reporter, John Doyle visits Penzance and Newlyn during a time of distress to local residents. Many yachts and fishing vessels have been damaged due to a severe storm causing flooding to the surrounding areas and damaging the ports’ sea defences.
The third day of the 1979 Fastnet Race saw 306 yachts caught in the storm resulting in 18 fatalities. The Royal Navy, emergency services and civilian vessels mounted the largest ocean rescue operation in peacetime in stormy seas with waves hitting 50 feet at their highest.
