Still Alice
Julianne Moore won an Oscar for her extraordinary performance as a linguistics professor diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Director: Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland
Overview
Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) is a confident, highly articulate linguistics professor who prises her intellect. At age fifty she receives the bombshell diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's, a stunning realisation that tests her sense of self and strains her family relationships.
Julianne Moore won the ‘triple crown’ of acting awards (Oscar, Golden Globe, Bafta) for her peerless performance as Alice, a heartbreaking portrayal that humanises this dreaded condition in startling clarity. Still Alice is not entirely downheartening though, and is ultimately an inspiring story about the significance of family ties and what it means to be human. The story behind the film is equally astonishing, with co-director Richard Glatzer battling adversity in the form of motor neurone disease to finish the film before ultimately succumbing just after the film’s Oscar win.
