Cup Final: Aston Villa V Sunderland at the Crystal Palace
121,919 spectators filled Crystal Palace as the league's two top teams, Aston Villa and Sunderland, met in the 1913 FA Cup final.
Overview
As the league's top teams, both Aston Villa and Sunderland entered the 1913 FA Cup final at Crystal Palace with high hopes of claiming the trophy and with dreams of doing the double. In a hard fought match, Aston Villa (in the dark shirts) overcame Sunderland with the only goal of the game. Unfortunately, the limitations of the camera equipment means that only the goal celebrations have been captured, not the goal itself. More surprisingly, the cameraman appears to have captured a penalty situation, but not the taking, and missing, of the penalty.
Aston Villa failed to do the double as Sunderland went on to win the league. Subsequent to the match, two players plus the referee were suspended for the first month of the next season; Sunderland's man mountain Charlie Thomson and Villa's Harry Hampton for resuming their long-running feud and the referee, Mr Arthur Adams, supposedly for allowing too much extra time.
