Wind, Tide & Oar

Huw Wahl’s immersive, meditative exploration into engineless sailing, shot over three years with a 1960s hand-wound camera.

Inspired by his sister Rose’s commitment to engineless sailing, director Huw Wahl takes us on a cinematic journey through rivers, coastlines and the open sea, meeting sailors who have chosen to forgo the engine and harness the wind's power.

Using his own “engineless” 1960s hand-wound camera, Wahl’s film invites us to reflect on the physical efforts and centuries-old knowledge of traditional seafaring, where nature and intuition dictate the pace. This is a thoroughly immersive film, quiet and contemplative, with an ASMR-inducing soundtrack of lapping water and billowing sails.
