Overview

This transcendent cinematic discovery is a harrowing psychological drama in which a veteran detective allows his hunt for a child murderer to become an obsession. Incredibly haunting and atmospheric (and that’s just the hypnotic sound design), it’s directed with taut precision by György Fehér, a long-time associate of Béla Tarr.

Based on a novel by Swiss author Friedrich Dürrenmatt (The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel - itself the novelisation of a script for 1958 film It Happened in Broad Daylight), Twilight fell into legal limbo and decades-long unavailability after its producers failed to licence the literary rights in perpetuity, compounded by the release of Sean Penn's official 2001 adaptation, The Pledge. Thanks to the efforts of Hungary’s National Film Institute and UK distributor Second Run, these issues were untangled and this 4k restoration has finally been rereleased to wide acclaim.
