Barnard Castle and District
Two majestic bridges, enigmatic ruins, rural scenes and a thriving town centre - welcome to Barnard Castle, County Durham.
Overview
This picturesque travelogue takes in the varied sights and delights of the Teesdale market town and surrounding area. Tranquil scenes of River Greta bridges, enigmatic ruins - including Egglestone Abbey and Barnard Castle's round tower - are tempered with street scenes around the handsome market place and The Bank. The film was made by Charles Urban, a pioneering Anglo-American producer.
The intertitle points out Blagroves Inn on The Bank, one of the oldest houses in Barnard Castle, supposedly visited by Oliver Cromwell in 1648. The pub next door, The Shoulder of Mutton, closed in 1955.
