Bloody Oranges
“Now is the time of monsters.” Jean-Christophe Meurisse’s shocking pitch-black French comedy plunges us into the horrors of a society that is failing.
Director: Jean-Christophe Meurisse
Overview
“The old world is dying, the new world struggles to be born: Now is the time of monsters.” Splitting the film into two parts, this quote momentarily appears on screen before plunging us into dark, vengeful and monstrous territory. Up to this point, we meet a string of characters, from a retired couple (Lorella Cravotta and Olivier Saladin) competing in a dance contest, desperate to claim the financial prize – to a corrupt politician (Christophe Paou, Stranger By the Lake) bringing in some crippling financial legislation - to a teenage rape victim (Lilith Grasmug) who displays a creative flair for revenge.
Jean-Christophe Meurisse’s film is a graphic and shocking look at how society creates monsters of us. As fantastical and grotesque the characters might seem, the vignettes are loosely based on three real news stories, lending a further slice of horror.
