Gosforth Park Races 1912
Join the crowds and place a bet at Newcastle Racecourse.
Overview
These unedited shots of the 1912 Gosforth Park Races may have been filmed by George Henderson of Stockton, who seems to have been connected to the local landowner, the Marquis of Londonderry. We see huge crowds waiting to get in, controlled by policemen and stewards, and glimpse the races themselves, which include the Northumberland Plate Race.
Unlike today, the racehorses and their jockeys are lined up next to each other at the starting line, without the use of cages.
