An aging director conjures a tale of adultery, betrayal and grief in this modern classic written by Ingmar Bergman.

An affair threatens the marriage of an actress Marianne and musician Markus. Determined to continue the relationship, Marianne moves in with her lover, David, a theatre director. But she is tormented by Markus’ refusal to let her have custody of their daughter. When Markus proposes a solution, it only deepens the deception and mistrust, with devastating consequences for the whole family.

Written by Ingmar Bergman and directed by his long-time collaborator Liv Ullman, this semi-autobiographical drama explores the destructive consequences of infidelity and the emotional games played between lovers. Inspired by an earlier trip to Paris, the film draws on Bergman’s own experiences to create a painfully intimate portrait of desire, jealousy and guilt.
